Hydrated skin is not only healthy, but looks smooth, radiant, and youthful. It can often be challenging, however, to keep our skin from becoming too dry, especially during the winter months. The following are 10 ways to keep your skin hydrated and looking great.

1. Keep Skin Covered

Being exposed to the elements can damage and dehydrate your skin. Be sure to wear gloves and scarves to cover your hands and portions of your face when out in cold weather. Use a wide-brim straw hat to block sun and wind during the warmer months.

2. Hydrate the Air Around You

The environment you live in plays a big part in the overall health of your skin. Keeping a humidifier in your home will help reduce the damage done to skin by dry air. This is especially important during the winter when heaters are often in use.

3. Switch to Warm Baths

Taking hot baths and showers may feel good after a long day, but they're not good for your skin. Hot water can strip away protective oils that keep skin feeling smooth and supple. It can also cause skin to itch. Warm water is still able to open the pores and allows dirt and toxins to get washed away.

4. Work Up a Sweat

Exercise is not only good for your body but will keep your skin in top condition as well. Sweating is a natural way to eliminate chemicals and toxins that build up under the skin. This is a great way to help reduce the incidence of acne and other types of blemishes. Working up a sweat also helps produce more natural, beneficial oils in the skin.

5. Use Moisturizer Correctly

Most people use some type of moisturizer, but using it effectively is another matter. For starters, lighter moisturizer should be used during the day when you're preparing your skin for make-up. A heavier cream can be used at night. The simplest moisturizers are often the best. Try to find those that aren't oil based or contain perfumes or other unnecessary ingredients.

6. Avoid the Tanning Bed

7. Eat Fish

8. Moisturize After Showering

Dermatologists suggest moisturizing right after showering or bathing to make the most of your moisturizer. The product you use is then better able to trap the moisture already on your body right after bathing.

9. Limit Alcohol Consumption

While a moderate amount of alcohol may provide overall health benefits, too much can damage our skin. Skin is our largest organ, and just as alcohol leaves other organs dehydrated, heavy drinking causes skin to become dry and depleted of vital nutrients.

10. Use Sunscreen

You may not be sunbathing, but simply being outside exposes your skin to potentially damaging sun rays. Even during winter months sunscreen is essential to keeping our skin from becoming too dry. Make sure to use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.
